Geology and geochemistry of oil and gas

The Chair trains students in the field of geology, prospecting and exploration of oil, gas and coal deposits. More than 1100 graduates worked and continue to work in various scientific and industrial institutions in Russia and the CIS.

The Chair trains students in the following areas of specialization: "Geology and Geochemistry of Oil and Gas", "Geology of Coal Deposits", "Geology of Marine Oil and Gas Deposits". Since 2003 the Chair has trained undergraduate students in the field of environmental problems in the oil and gas industry. Students get profound fundamental knowledge and practical skills in main geological and geochemical disciplines, basic knowledge in engineering geology and geophysical methods of investigations. The Chair offers a large number of specialized courses in: "Geology and Geochemistry of Oil and Gas", "Oil-Gas- and Coal-bearing Basins in the CIS and Overseas Countries", "Methods of Prospecting for Oil, Gas and Coal Deposits", "Lithogenesis in Sedimentary Basins", "Fundamentals of Petroleum Geology and Exploration of Oil and Gas Fields", "Computer Modeling and Processing of Data in Petroleum Geology", "Hydrogeology of Oil and Gas Fields", "Drilling of Boreholds", "Methods of Marine Investigations", etc.

Recently a number of new text-books have been published by members of the Chair, including "Geology and Geochemistry of Oil and Gas", "Hydrogeology of Oil and Gas Deposits", "Geological and Geophysical Study of Oil-bearing Productive Sediments", "Chemistry of Fossil Fuels".

Scientific investigations are carried out within the framework of a general line "Complex Geological and Geochemical Analysis of Formation of Fossil Fuel Mineral Deposits in Sedimentary Basins". The studies of various aspects of geological history of oil- and coal-bearing basins and formation of deposits in the Middle Russian basin, Barents Sea, Timan-Pechora, Kamchatka basins and contiguous water areas, the Baltic oil-bearing area, Buzulucskaya depression, in Eastern Caucasia have been done. Recently the analysis of conditions and prospects of development of the power engineering resource base in Russia and other regions of the world, including resources of methane in coal deposits, has been carried out.
